Coping with the Weather
(Part 3)
Tips to keep on walking even when
it's hot, cold, or inclement weather
Walking
in Rain, Snow and Ice
- What you wear is, of course, important. In the cold and
precipitation, a base
layer
that wicks moisture underneath a breathable,
water-resistant outer layer
should keep you dry and comfy.
A hat
or hood will help as well.
- If it's warm and raining, a jacket can work, but it might also
make you too hot. Simply wearing a hat
to shed the rain from your face can work wonders on those days. Some
people like a tried and true umbrella,
too.
- If there's snow or ice on the ground, traction will be an issue.
Spikes or Yaktrax
are an option to consider.
- Sometimes, it's just too nasty to be walking outside, not to
mention it can be unsafe. Those days are perfect for walking or
exercising indoors (mall walking, riding a stationary
bike
or bike
trainer
,
or using an exercise
video
are all good
opportunities to help you stick to your exercise plan and be smart
about it.
