More and more people are counting on their feet to get them where they
need to go. There are pros and cons to think about when you're
considering walking to your destination rather than driving or using
some other mode of transportation. Here are a few to consider:
Pros
It's good for your body. You'll burn more calories by walking
then by driving or riding the bus (about 320/hour for a 150 pound
person).
It's good for the environment. None of those nasty carbon
emissions to worry about.
You have time to yourself, and time to think. If you're walking
to work, you'll have a chance to think through your day and mentally
plan before you get to the office. If you're walking home, you'll be
able to decompress and put your day behind you before you walk in the
door to your house.
It can save time. Instead of trying to squeeze a workout into
your day, the walking you do to get to work, scool, or the store can
provide plenty of exercise.
Cons
Time: It will most likely take longer to get where you're going.
Planning: You'll need to think ahead a bit, not just about how
long it will take to get there, but about what route you'll take.
Weather: You'll want to dress for the weather, and that can mean
heat, cold, or precipitation.
Carrying stuff: How will you get your computer to work and back?
How will you get the groceries you've bought back home?
