Walking Safety
Walking is great exercise, but some walkers worry about
their safety, especially when walking alone. Here are some ideas to
help you feel and be more safe while you're out walking.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Don't get so wrapped up in your
walking that you fail to notice things around you: people, vehicles,
dogs,
etc.
- Use sidewalks when possible.
- Where there's no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
- If you're walking when it's dark out, wear white or
light-colored clothing. Better yet, wear reflective clothing, a
reflective vest, or a safety light. RoadRunnerSports.com has a variety of reflective and safety gear to choose from. RoadId.com also has a selection of
items to help you be seen in the dark:

- Walk with a partner or as part of a walking group.
- When you're walking around traffic, walk defensively. Don't
assume that drivers see you, or know what you're going to do. Be
predictable
(for example, don't dart across the street).
- Take ID with you. www.RoadID.com
has a selection of wrist and ankle bracelets (and more) that make it
easy and painless to bring your ID along.

- Carry a cell phone with you, to call for help if you need it.
- Above all else, be smart and enjoy yourself. Protect yourself
enough so that you feel safe, but not so much that you're afraid to be
out walking.
