Check with your doctor any time you start a new exercise and/or
diet plan, especially if you have a history of any kind of health problems.
Find a plan that works for you. Visit our Walking Plans page for some options.
Start small; don't try to walk 5 miles on your first day.
Pick the time of day that fits your body and lifestyle the
best. Are you a morning person? Walk in the morning before work, school,
or your daily activities. Do you have more energy at mid-day? Walk during
your lunch hour. Do you find that you're most alert in the evening? Walk
then, and involve your family or friends, if that helps.
Do you crave alone time? Set aside time for walking to have
that time alone.
Do you prefer to be around other people? Find a walking buddy
or group, or enlist family members or friends to join you.
Can't seem to find the time? Make the time. Your health is
important, and so are you. Commit to spending at least 30 minutes a day
on taking care of yourself.
Are you worried that you don't have the right equipment or
gear? Don't be. The most important item you need is a good pair of walking
shoes; beyond that, you can choose what works for you, and you don't have
to buy anything new and fancy. Visit our Walking Gear page
for more detailed information.
The most important thing is to simply get started. Put one
foot in front of the other and START WALKING!
